ADR 1.1.3.6 calculation method
Check first whether another exemption applies (special provision, limited quantities, excepted quantities, etc.). Goods fully exempted under the listed exemptions are not included in the 1.1.3.6 calculation. (ADR 1.1.3.4.1–1.1.3.4.3, Volume 1, page 9; ADR 1.1.3.6.5, Volume 1, page 11)
Identify the transport category of each UN entry in Table A, column (15): category 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4. (ADR 1.1.3.6.1, Volume 1, page 9)
Use the applicable quantity unit:
- liquids: litres;
- solids, liquefied/refrigerated liquefied/dissolved gases: net kg;
- compressed or adsorbed gases and chemicals under pressure: water capacity in litres;
- articles: net mass in kg, without packaging. (ADR 1.1.3.6.3, Volume 1, page 11)
- If all goods are in one category, compare the total quantity with the category limit:
- Category 0: 0 → no 1.1.3.6 exemption;
- Category 1: 20;
- Category 2: 333;
- Category 3: 1,000;
- Category 4: unlimited.
Certain UN numbers in category 1 have a maximum of 50 kg as specified in the table footnote. (ADR 1.1.3.6.3, Volume 1, page 11)
- For mixed transport categories, calculate:
Total = (Cat. 1 quantity × 50) + (specified Cat. 1 footnote-a quantity × 20) + (Cat. 2 quantity × 3) + Cat. 3 quantity
The result must be ≤ 1,000 to use the 1.1.3.6 exemption. Category 4 is not included in this formula. (ADR 1.1.3.6.4, Volume 1, page 11)
Example: 10 L of category 2 liquid + 400 L of category 3 liquid:(10 × 3) + 400 = 430
Since 430 ≤ 1,000, the transport is within the 1.1.3.6 threshold. (ADR 1.1.3.6.4, Volume 1, page 11)
